final Gatsby

1. Is Daisy a likeable character or more of an anti-hero?
None of the upper class are particularly likeable in this novel, but I also think it  depends on the readers' personality. It also depends on what your expectations were. I actually liked her because she lived up to the exact expectation I gave her. Most people don't like how materialistic she is.

2.Do you think Tom is happy with the turnout because he got Daisy and Gatsby was killed, or upset because Myrtle was killed?
I think he feels justice was served to Gatsby and Daisy, but is probably upset about this whole ordeal. I think he really does have feelings, but tries to act tough and cover them up. He made the best, according to him, of the situation with Myrtle's death.

3. Is Tom really evil, or is he just putting on an act to return to his glory days?
I don't feel that tom is evil because i think Nick just portrayed him in that light. He has real feelings, but he keeps them to himself. He isn't a very warm and welcoming person, so he basically gives up on being nice to people. I also think he is a bit jealous of Gatsby because he thinks Gatsby has everything. He wants to win Daisy because he sees it as some sort of competition over Daisy. Gatsby doesn;t feel that way, he just loves her.

4. Did Gatsby fail in the end to reach his goal?
I would say that, yes, he did fail because you cannot get the past back. You can try, but it will never be the same. People change and grow, and that is why we hold onto memories so tightly. daisy went with Tom in the end, so Gatsby never got what he wanted.

  1. I think that the more important question might be why Fitzgerald would have his protagonist fail in his pursuit. What is he saying on a larger scale?
