Final 1984 post
I think that Big Brother has won in the end because Winston and Julia are captured and tortured. They are rebels, but the government changes their mind through various types of torture. They push Winston to the limit and he gives in; he even betrays Julia. At the end of the book he says he loves big brother, so the government did win. They won because they actually changed Winston's mind to love big brother. It seems like it would be extremely difficult to bring this state down, but you would have to start small. then little by little gather more and more people in to you secret group. It would have to be extremely secret and very exclusive. This group could start with small rebellions and then work their way up to defeating the state. At the end of the novel, Winston's is pressed to his limit of fears with torture from the government. He tries so hard to resist, but he just cannot help it. He gives in to what the government wants, and that is total control. Winston leaves the place he was tortured in a completely different state of mind. They have actually changed his thought process, and he now seems zombie like. He doesn't know Julia anymore, and he kind of just floats around like the other people in the state. He isn't smart anymore; he claims to love big brother. He gave up his struggle against the government. When writing in his journal," then almost without a pause he wrote beneath it: Two And Two Make Five"(287). It also shows that the party has taken over his mind when, " he accepted everything. The past was alterable. the past had never been altered. Oceania was at war with East Asia. Oceania had always been at war with East Asia"(287).
