Nick- Nick is definitely a hero because we relate to him. He also happens to be the protagonist of the story. Nick is the only character so far who doesn't have a lot of money, and this sets him apart form the others. He is quite innocent which makes us like him. What makes him a hero is that he is reliable, but a bit clueless at times. As the reader, you want things to work out well for him. " Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known"(59).
Jordan Baker- Jordan is an anti-hero because she means well but says all the wrong things. She is a nice person and we like her as a character, but she has some major flaws. Jordan has a past, and she is constantly wrapped in a lie. She doesn't mean to, but she makes Nick begin to fall for her. She is an anti-hero because she doesn't mean t hurt anyone, but does on accident. " She wasn't able to endure being at a disadvantage and, given this unwillingness, I suppose she had begun dealing in subterfuges when she was very young in order to keep her cool, insolent smile turned to the world and yet satisfy the demands of her hard, jaunty body"(58).
Tom- To is clearly a villain form the very beginning. He is portrayed in a sinister way from head to toe. He just isn't very friendly or welcoming, and his appearance is scary. He is cheating on his wife and doesn't;t really care, and this cause problems for the entire family and circle of friends. He is a troublemaker, and the main character doesn't particularly like Tom. " Two shining arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward"(7).
Gatsby- Gatsby is another hero, but in a different way. Gatsby has this edge of mysteriousness about him, and we don"t know that much about his character yet. He seems very cool and collected, and he doesn't need people to make him happy.Even though he has parties all the time. He is interesting character who makes you feel safe. He has this reassuring quality that makes everybody like him. It is almost magical. " It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself, and assured you that it precisely had the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey"(48).
