Death Penalty essays
From the two death penalty essays, I believe the Kroll essay was much stronger and more persuasive. Kroll used so much emotion that it made you feel like you where actually there. He also used a real example that he experienced about a close friend. Mencken made some mistakes in that he started off by completely turning down the typical arguments for his side. That just made me disagree with him right from the start, and I didn't want to listen to him. Kroll also never stated his opinion, he just explained what happened. This makes you agree with him no matter what side he is on.
Sixteen MIlitary Wives
1. Thus song is about how different groups and types of people deal with enemies. It is talking about how military wives are sad when husbands go away.
2. The theme of this is that America is the best, but they must do cruel things to be the best. You do whatever America wants you to do. The talk about how the anchor has to act like nothing is wrong when husbands are dying at war. We are made to think America is so wonderful, but really we do awful things just to have the most power. It makes us the best, but we do awful things to become the world's top country. They want you to think about what America is really like.

Race for th Prize- The flaming Lips-1999
Theme- The theme is that humanity wants to beat everything with science, including earth itself. The human race wants everything, we are so greedy, and we try to control the universe. However, it is out of our control. This was in 1999 right before the year 2000. Everyone thought the world was going to end. So, humans got working with science to try and beat the disaster that was coming. they wanted to protect people and their families because the human race wants to be on top. It is unnerving when you realize there is nothing you or your society can do to halt earth's natural forces and ways.
" forging for the future"

" for the cure that is their prize"
" for the good of all mankind"

Fallacy in JFK speech
" And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you- ask what you can do for your country."
This is an example of excluded middle. excluded middle is where only two options are given, leaving no gray area. However, there are clearly more options that contain a middle ground that are not mentioned. This is excluded middle because JFK only gives two choices, but there are definitely other options.
I believe that this speech is effective because of all the fallacies. fallacies are very common, but we would not use them if they didn't not work. They are technically fallacies to kind of trick people, but the work. He makes people fall in love with this great speech because it is so vague and many fallacies are used. Fallacies can be very persuasive. His phrases are also quite simple, clean, smooth, and easy to grasp so people naturally like it more.

Duck and Cover
This is another post I could not make because it wasn't working.
overt- Duck and Cover. Go in your home. Obey civil services officers if an atomic bomb comes.
Covert- protect yourself from the enemy because they could come at any time. if you don't shield yourself from the bad, then you are bad too. your not American if you do not hide from the bomb. Do the right thing. they are proving that the enemy is bad and America is good because America is trying too protect you.
This is propaganda because it is given people the mindset that the government will protect them. This is an attempt to keep the public ignorant because if an atomic bomb comes they are going to be dead. This video is trying to dissuade fear and reassure people, so they don't know what could really happen.

Destination Earth
-This was one the posts I couldn't do because my blog was not working.-
Overt- The message is to use oil because it is so beneficial and great. it is also unlimited.
Covert- it is to support oil companies and create new products. It is encouraging competition beause this video clearly supports oil. It also shows that communism is bad.
This is trying to prove that oil companies are the saving grace, and without them we would have nothing. Oil companies are the good guys. This video is training support for future oil companies and creating competition.
It is also trying to get across the point that you don't want to live in a communist country and that America is much better. After watching the video, the creators of this video want you to be Americanized.

The kitchen is the key
The overt message is to eat less bread.
The covert message is to make sacrifices in order to benefit America during the war. Spend less on yourself, and more money can go towards the war.
It is propaganda because the lady is dressed in red, white, and blue, and the ad is actually going to make you sacrifice. On the surface, however, it is just telling you to eat less bread. The ad wants you to show your support, be patriotic, and give money.

The Clash- Clampdown
This song is talking about how the government is taking over, and trying to restrict poeple's lives. People are defying what the government wants, but as they grow older, they begin to let the government take over. They conform to exactly what the government wants. When it says, ' We will teach our twisted speech to the young believers", the government is going to say things that are completely wrong, but they are going to make you believe it anyway. The common people seem mad, but doomed in the end because the government will always win. It is loud to show the madness, but also very choppy in the lyrics and instruments. the song being choppy shows the the common people aren't sure what to do. They don't know if they should just follow the crazy rules or stand up for themselves. The same quote I used above shows persuasion because the government is going to put ideas into kids in order to persuade them even at such a young age. This cause the children to stick with what they learned as they grow older.

4 Qoutes
Qoutes:
4,11,43, 91
91. Careful and correct use of language is a powerful aid to straight thinking, for putting into words
precisely what we mean necessitates getting our own minds quite clear on what we mean.
This quote is saying that if you know how to use your words correctly then our minds will have clear thoughts as well. Clear thoughts are always better presented and understood by others. This leads to a better argument because through clear thoughts comes clear speech, so your audience will really be able to understand what you are saying. If they can't comprehend what your explaining, how can the ever be persuaded? I like this quote because it gives advice, and it tells you how to be more persuasive. You must be clear on what you are talking or writing about, and that starts with the correct use of language and good word choice.
